Preparations for Installation
The final, and most rewarding, step in the process of getting new countertops is installation. We ask that you make a few preparations prior to installation.
How to prepare your home for a professional countertop installation
The most rewarding phase of your project is seeing your finished surfaces leave our onsite fabrication facility and arrive at your home for professional placement. At Gallery 77, our seasoned crew has spent over two decades perfecting this hand-off, ensuring that the precision we achieve in our shop translates perfectly to your kitchen or bathroom. Because we utilize high-precision laser measurements and CNC cutting technology, every countertop we create is designed to glide into place with absolute accuracy. However, achieving a flawless finish requires a collaborative effort to ensure the site is properly prepared before our craftsmen arrive.
To protect your property and ensure our team has the necessary access, all plumbing must be temporarily disconnected and any existing countertops removed prior to the scheduled installation date. While Gallery 77 is not a licensed plumbing contractor, we can include the removal and disposal of old countertops as part of your initial project estimate. Additionally, all base cabinetry must be permanently secured and level within 1/8” across a 10-foot radius. Any structural projections, such as window or door mouldings that might hinder the placement of the stone, should be removed beforehand to prevent delays or damage.
The environment of your home also plays a critical role in the integrity of the installation. During colder months, it is essential that the installation area is properly heated, as the high-quality adhesives used for seams and sink mounting require consistent temperatures to cure correctly and maintain their warranty. Once the stone is set, our team will meticulously color-match seam adhesives based on the unique appraisal of your specific slab. For natural stone countertops, we apply an initial protective sealer, but we strongly recommend a regular maintenance schedule to preserve the stone’s enduring elegance.
Critical requirements for a successful countertop and backsplash installation
What plumbing and appliance preparations are required before the installers arrive?
For the safety of your home and the efficiency of the install, all sinks, faucets, and cooktops must be disconnected. Appliances like stoves and dishwashers often need to be moved clear of the workspace so our team can safely maneuver heavy stone slabs. It is important to note that the homeowner is responsible for setting the final heights of the stove and dishwasher after the countertops are in place to ensure they align perfectly with the new surface. If you are planning a kitchen remodel, coordinating these trade professionals to follow our installation is a key actionable step.
Why is it important to have level cabinetry before stone installation?
Natural stone and quartz are rigid materials that do not flex. If your cabinets are not level, the stone will be under constant stress, which can lead to cracking or failed seams over time. While we make every effort to shim and secure the stone, starting with a level foundation (within the 1/8″ industry standard) is vital for long-term durability. This is especially true for large islands or L-shaped counters where multiple slabs must meet at a perfectly flat junction.
What should I expect regarding the fit of a full-height stone backsplash?
When installing a full-height stone backsplash, we aim for a near flush fit with the minimal gap as per required by industry standards. However, most residential walls have slight high and low spots. While we use professional techniques to minimize gaps, a perfectly flush fit cannot be guaranteed against bowed walls. If you are choosing between big tile vs. small tile backsplashes, remember that full-slab stone provides a seamless look but requires the most precise wall preparation to achieve the best aesthetic result.
How do I maintain the sealer on my new natural stone surfaces?
Following the fabrication and installation of natural stone, Gallery 77 applies a professional-grade sealer to help ward off stains. However, sealer is not permanent. To protect your investment, you should test your stone’s porosity every six months by placing a few drops of water on the surface; if the water beads, the seal is intact. If it soaks in, it is time to reseal. This is a simple but essential part of why you should reseal natural stone to prevent long-term damage from household oils and liquids.
What role does temperature play in the curing of countertop adhesives?
Modern countertop installation relies on two-part epoxy adhesives that are chemically engineered to bond stone. These chemicals are temperature-sensitive. If the installation site is too cold, the adhesive may become brittle or fail to bond to the sink clips and seams entirely. To ensure we can provide our full warranty on our work, please ensure your home’s HVAC system is active and set to a standard living temperature at least 24 hours before our arrival. This ensures the stone and the adhesives can reach a stable thermal state for a permanent bond.
Can Gallery 77 help with the removal of my existing countertops?
Yes, we offer professional tear-out services to simplify your bathroom refresh or kitchen update. By having our team handle the removal, we can ensure that the underlying cabinetry is inspected for any issues that might affect the new stone installation. If you choose to handle the removal yourself, please ensure the cabinets are cleared of all old adhesive and debris before our scheduled arrival. This allows our crew to begin the precision placement of your new Quartzite, Marble, or Granite immediately.
