Make amazing impressions on your customers. Make life easier for your employees. Take pride from owning an attractive (and altogether more valuable) business by choosing the perfect countertop for it.
We won’t pretend there aren’t appropriate places for steel and concrete countertops. For instance, if you’re designing a large animal veterinary clinic, then you’d rightly prefer such drab yet utilitarian surfaces. Cattle won’t be impressed by Calacatta marble.
But if you’re designing a business that people are actually meant to see and enjoy being in, only a higher grade of countertop will do. Tile. Natural stone. Engineered quartz. These are the stuff of great commercial counters!
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind as you choose your business’s next countertops.
Hospitality
Durability, ease of maintenance, and peak stain resistance are all of the utmost importance to restaurant countertops. That’s why so many restaurateurs prefer engineered quartz. True to its name, it is a manufactured material – primarily glass-like quartz crystals suspended in resin, which create a hard-wearing and pore-free surface.
Engineered quartz is also heat resistant (albeit not as much as granite), making it suitable for kitchens and kitchen-adjacent spaces. And because it’s available in every color and pattern imaginable, it’s easy to incorporate quartz into any restaurant, pub, bar, brewery, hotel, hair salon or nail salon.
Retail
Once again, engineered quartz represents your best choice of countertop if you’re designing a retail space. As one of the hardest countertop materials available (7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it literally tougher than nails), quartz is built to withstand heavy usage without scratching or chipping.
Are you creating countertops for a store that specializes in luxury goods? If you sell jewelry, watches, or even high-end electronics, then you would do well to invest in a more visually appealing natural stone surface: at least one, for the area where you show goods to customers. Select a subtle taupe, beige, white or black surface so as to not attract too much attention away from your wares.
Office
For forward-facing areas of an office, we must yet again recommend engineered quartz. If the general public will have access to any surface, then it simply must be designed to endure the worst treatment the general public can dole out.
For areas your staff has sole access to, you can get much more creative. For staff kitchens, cafeterias, and workspaces, we have found tile countertops to be superb. They are durable. They aren’t porous. They require no sealing. They are also resistant to heat and microbial growth, and available in literally every color, pattern, style and material you could name. And while tile counters may take longer to install, that’s not a problem for businesses which regularly close for two days at a time.
